Bass-baritone Frederick Long has appeared at the Oxford International Song Festival as a member of Schubert & Co. and we are delighted to welcome him back for this solo recital.

His programme pits a battle against the elements, exploring our relationship with the natural world: are we subsumed by Mother Nature’s indifference, or offered solace and consolation? A selection of Schubert’s songs for bass voice begins the programme, including ‘Auf der Donau’ and ‘Der Schiffer’. This is followed by some strikingly personal responses to English verse by Shostakovich, as we mark the 50th anniversary of the composer’s death.

Concluding the programme is a group of English songs by Quilter, Ireland, Finzi, Muriel Herbert and Jonathan Dove.
