Winners of The Wolfson Art Prize 2024 announced

Another year and another round of fantastic creative entries to The Wolfson Art Prize.

Thank you to all the applicants, the judges were so impressed by the talent from across the college. Members of the Wolfson community were invited to enter their visual art in the form of painting, drawing, photography, textiles, sculpture or even experimental film, for the chance to win a cash prize and the opportunity to have their art displayed in College.

Speaking on the winning pieces, Wolfson College Creative Arts Fellow and judge of The Wolfson Art Prize Tom Brennan said:

“What unites these three winning pieces is that way that each challenges an idea of a kind of art practice. From watercolour, to ‘cat paintings’, to industrial photography. The three winners twist our assumptions unique ways.”

fIRST PLACE

‘Inside’ By Ellen Hausner

“I was particularly impressed by the colour and detail of this watercolour painting.

Watercolour is a misunderstood form. We might associate it with pastoral landscapes and simple still life. However ‘Inside’ is evidence that watercolour can be punchy, full of layers and ideas. The piece is open to interpretation but I love how it the textures reveal themselves upon each inspection”

Second Place

‘The Watcher’ by Naomi Marshall

“An incredibly accomplished acrylic painting. For me, the detail of the work, the playfulness between foreground and background and the careful selection of colour set ‘The Watcher’ apart. I’m not normally a fan of paintings of cats, but the atmosphere in this painting is palpable.”

ThIrd place

‘Nature’s Definition of Space’ by Yui Chang

“This photograph, the second in a series of 5, is a dynamic and exciting piece of photography. I love how much negative space exist in the top of the frame, the way that it draws the eye inward. There’s so much textural contrast here. It feels like the image hides secrets.”

Congratulations to all the winners!
