Wolfson College Celebrates Lunar New Year
Last week, Wolfson College came alive with colour, community, and celebration as we marked Lunar New Year with a series of vibrant events.
The series of events kicked off on Wednesday evening, when the Chinese Cultural Society, Southeast Asia Society, Chair of GM, Diversity Representatives, and our very own Darshini Nadarajan come together to co-host a fantastic Lunar New Year gathering in the UCR. The space was packed with guests who received Hong Bao (red envelopes), positive affirmation cards, festive treats, and even took part in the traditional Yee Sang prosperity salad tossing ceremony—to welcome good fortune for the year ahead. Among the highlights was the impressive 21 kilos of easy peeler clementines ordered for the occasion—a new Wolfson record!
The celebration was made even more special by the wonderful mix of attendees, including guests from multiple colleges, a surprise journalist, and even a Wolfson student’s grandma! The enthusiastic turnout and heartwarming feedback showed just how meaningful this event was to our community.
The Lunar New Year festivities didn’t stop there. On Thursday, our Guest Night Dinner brought together students, staff, and fellows to share a festive meal and on Friday, the community enjoyed Kong Ming lantern decorating, adding a creative and reflective touch to the week’s events. The celebrations wrapped up on Sunday with a red lantern-making arts and crafts session, where attendees had the chance to create their own festive decorations.
Wolfson College is proud to celebrate significant cultural moments throughout the year, reflecting the diverse and inclusive nature of our community. A huge thank you to everyone who contributed to making Lunar New Year such a memorable occasion—we look forward to celebrating together again next year!
