Wolfson in the USA
2024 marks fifty years since Wolfson College moved into its permanent home on the banks of the River Cherwell. The year features a busy programme of commemorative events, and in April the celebrations moved stateside to share the festivities with the Wolfson community across the pond.
Over two weeks, Wolfsonians came together at a series of alumni events to share memories of their time at Oxford, build professional networks and celebrate with Sir Tim Hitchens, President of the College, and Huw David, Wolfson’s Development Director.
The bi-coastal tour took Wolfson’s team to New York, where they experienced a magnitude-4.8 earthquake, before making their way to Washington, D.C. and then San Francisco, taking in a total solar eclipse from the plane on the way. The signs proved auspicious, and the team had the pleasure of meeting with dozens of Wolfsonians ranging from recent leavers to the first generation of alumni.
In New York, the event was generously hosted by Olga Berg (EMBA, 2023) at her residence on the Upper West Side; in San Francisco the University Club’s historic Black Cat Bar accommodated a gathering of alumni from the Bay Area and beyond.
“It’s always a pleasure to meet Wolfson alumni in the US,” said Sir Tim. “The range of work they do is impressive: running start-ups, political lobbying on the climate emergency, academic research and teaching, playing their part in the largest Silicon Valley corporations. We’re always grateful for their support and philanthropy.”
Wolfson is proud to be one of Oxford’s most international colleges, with 89 different nationalities represented in the current student body. The College enjoys especially strong transatlantic links, with notable American alumni including LinkedIn founder Reid Hoffman and Wes Moore, current Governor of Maryland.
