Wolfson JRF shortlisted in 2025 Vice-Chancellor’s Awards

The shortlist for this year’s Vice-Chancellor’s Awards was recently announced, and we were thrilled to see Wolfson JRF Pek Kei (Becky) Im included in the ‘Breakthrough Researcher Award’ category, which recognises researchers at the early stages of their careers who have made a significant impact at the University.

Becky leads a multidisciplinary research programme, funded by a Wellcome Career Development Award, that aims to understand the scope, biological mechanisms, and burden of alcohol-related impacts in diverse populations. Her research combines traditional and molecular epidemiology methods, using large diverse population datasets to explore the causal relationships between alcohol use and a wide range of mental and physical health outcomes, and the biological pathways through which alcohol may affect health. By engaging with the public and policymakers, she aims to translate these findings into evidence-based policy interventions to improve public health.

Of her nomination, Becky said ‘I am honoured and humbled to be shortlisted. This recognition highlights the need to understand how common behavioural risk factors, like alcohol consumption, affect health and wellbeing in diverse populations, and the importance of bridging the gap between scientific evidence and policy to improve population health worldwide.’

‘This nomination also reflects my commitment to fostering an inclusive research culture and promoting professional development, which have been inspired and supported by various colleagues and mentors across my department, Wolfson College, the Medical Science Division, and the wider University. I am grateful for this recognition and view it as a motivation for me to continue advancing my research, championing positive research culture, and delivering meaningful impact.’

Congratulations, Becky!

The winners and highly commended nominees will be announced at a special ceremony hosted by the Vice-Chancellor at the Sheldonian Theatre on Thursday 15 May.
