Alain Fouad George

Professor Alain Fouad George is a historian of Islamic art and architecture with core interests in calligraphy, the arts of the book and early Islam. He seeks to explore the ways in which different expressions of material culture reflect the social life and modes of perception of their times. Born in Beirut and brought up in Paris, George took his first degree from the London School of Economics, then went on to study Islamic Art and Archaeology at the University of Oxford (DPhil, 2006). Before holding this current post, he was Lecturer, then Senior Lecturer at the University of Edinburgh for between 2007 and 2017. He has also taught briefly at the Université Saint-Joseph in Beirut, from 2005 to 2007. In 2010,  George was awarded a Philip Leverhulme Prize for his research.
