I trained as an ancient historian and then worked for many years as an academic. I am now a writer of literary non-fiction. I have written two academic books: E.E. Cummings’ Modernism and the Classics: Each Imperishable Stanza (OUP 2016) and Rome after Sulla (Bloomsbury Academic 2019). My first book of non-fiction, The Beauty of Living: E.E. Cummings in the Great War (W.W. Norton 2020), was selected as a New York Times Editors’ Choice. I am currently working on a biography of Cicero for Princeton University Press.
