As a post-holder in Oriental Studies, Dr James Benson’s job is to teach Sanskrit at all levels, covering texts from nearly all periods of Indian history, written in a wide range of genres. His main research interest is in the Sanskrit grammatical tradition. Currently, Benson isediting a late 17th century commentary on theÅšabdakaustubha, a celebrated work on grammar written three generations earlier.

Most recently Benson published an edition and translation of a 17th century work on jurisprudence, the Mimamsanyayasamgraha (Harrassowitz Verlag, 2010). For many years he has been responsible for revisions and corrections to the ever-popular text by Michael Coulson, Teach Yourself Sanskrit.
